Why is CAT5E known as “Legacy cabling”?
We still have customers asking us for CAT5E installations, though CAT5E is no longer approved for new installations. The difference in installation costs between CAT5E and CAT6A is minimal. The performance of CAT6A is considerably better though. CAT5E can run at 10Gbit for distances of up to 45 metres. CAT6A is capable of running at 10Gbit for distances of up to 100 metres! Accordingly we recommend that customers install CAT6A where possible.
It’s not just “a cable” – we only use quality products:
Competition in the market and rising copper costs have contributed to the use of cheaper CCA (copper clad aluminium) cable. CCA is less flexible, and fractures more easily. The aluminium will oxidise over time, and the performance will deteriorate. Although the aluminium is encased in copper, don’t forget about the cut ends at each termination! Also, as aluminium has higher resistance than copper, CCA performs badly when PoE (Power over Ethernet) is used.
We do not use CCA – all of our cabling is high purity copper cable. Although CCA can conform to the CPR’s, it represents poor value for money as it does not have good long-term performance. Using pure copper cabling is the best way of ensuring that your installation lasts for as long as you would expect it to.
