Although Broadband connections have become very reliable these days, sometimes the uptime available just isn't enough. When this is the case, businesses traditionally needed to consider leased lines, which incur heavy installation and rental costs. We have deployed solutions to customers where we replace the leased lines between the sites with Broadband connections, but provided an automatic backup connection using 3G connectivity. We are still able to provide full VPN connectivity between sites, even if either end switches to the backup connection. Another advantage to this solution is that in poor weather, where telegraph poles can be blown over, losing ADSL or even leased line connections, the 3G connection, being wireless, is unaffected. Using this solution, one of our customers has achieved the same level of availability as their previous leased lines, but at a cost of £229 per month across all four sites rather than the £1100 per month that they were paying before.
